Raster Ranger is an application that seeks to integrate raster and aerial imagery analysis into widely deployed field conservation software platforms. The Raster Ranger application is designed to programmatically receive operational field data (for example, from patrol reports) and automatically query, connect, and distribute relevant information and tasks to create labeled geospatial “training” data for conservation-focused machine learning applications and related data products. The creation of this labeled data includes an integrated, human-in-the-loop review process to ensure quality and relevance.

The Raster Ranger application generates labeled data for a variety of relevant object detection tasks and provides updated maps and predictive information regarding poaching activity and movement ecology. These data products are generated via programmatic change detection, cost distance analysis, suitability modeling, and other methods. These data products can be used to directly inform conservation stakeholders and analysts or be integrated into additional data processing pipelines to achieve conservation protection goals.

Raster Ranger is built using best-in-class free and open source software developed by the greater geospatial community. Raster Ranger would benefit from additional support and development. The project is currently in the prototype stage and several conservation partners are interested and ready to collaborate on implementation and evaluation in the field.
